Imagine being frightened, exhausted, cold and even starving, unsure of where you are or how to get help. You wish for a familiar face or compassionate voice, but instead people just rush past you as if you weren’t there or worse that your life does not matter. You call out for help, but no one seems to understand you. All is lost, you lay your head down and close your eyes, you have given up. Everyday injured wildlife found in similar situations finds relief at the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge.

Unfortunately, an increasing human population and spreading development along the Emerald Coast have created an increasing demand for wildlife rehabilitation and education. Seventy percent of all wildlife admitted for treatment is due to direct human impact. Collisions with automobiles and glass windows, attacks by domestic pets, entanglement injuries from fishing line or barbed wire, toxic reactions from chemical agents, encounters with malicious humans, and habitat destruction are only a few of the most common injuries presented by our wildlife patients.

Over the last 13 years, the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge has grown exponentially. The refuge is the areas oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation center that cares for nearly 2,000 animals every year. The goals of the refuge extend beyond wildlife rehabilitation as we seek to provide environmental education opportunities, to encourage all people of all ages to appreciate, understand, and enjoy the environment.
